Individual employers and the personal assistant workforce report, 2020

This updated report includes key figures about the size and profile of the personal assistant workforce, turnover rates, pay rates and other workforce information. Please note that the data used in this report was collected prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and the key findings include:

  1. An estimated 70,000 direct payment recipients employed their own staff creating around 135,000 personal assistant jobs in 2019/20. The average turnover rate of PAs was 16.7%.

  2. This was considerably lower than the turnover rate for care workers in the independent sector (40.6%).

  3. Did you know that the average hourly pay for a personal assistant was £9.53, 75p higher than the average rate for care workers.
