Are you a young disabled person living in London and looking for employment support or an organisation looking to broaden your employment opportunities?
Find out more about our Moving Up employability project.
In our investigation into young disabled people’s access to employment, Trailblazers, Muscular Dystrophy UK’s young disabled campaigners network, found that over half of their ‘Right to Work’ survey participants had experienced barriers when looking for work experience.
In response, Trailblazers developed the Moving Up project. We offer placements, events and careers resources to young disabled people, as well as working with project partners, to improve employment opportunities.
Disabled Londoners aged 16-30 receive mentoring, support and hands- on work experience in a range of departments, including:
Communications and PR
Digital and Social Media
Policy and Campaigns
We offer flexibility in length of placement, hours and the possibility of remote working. If you need equipment to make the workplace accessible our project has a small fund to buy the equipment you need to do the best job possible.
Participant Jack McLellan, who went on to the permanent position of HR Assistant, advised young disabled people: If possible come on the Moving Up project. Work experience is a safe environment to test what adjustments you need and what working hours you can do. There are so many different departments on offer there’s something relevant to everyone.”
After the project we want to stay in touch. We offer various opportunities to make sure that your training does not stop when you leave our doors. You will be invited to take part in the following opportunities:
External placements: We work with a network of external partners to provide further placements
Mentoring and careers advice
Moving Up Booster Days: These sessions are packed with a range of professional speakers and interactive skills activities and are open to young disabled people not involved in Moving Up
Ronit Himatlal, 23, said of one of our Booster Days: The Employment Skills Workshop was one my favourite parts of my summer placement at Muscular Dystrophy UK. I heard vital information on how to improve my skills to gain employment, developed my multi-tasking skills and broadened my knowledge of employment issues relating to disability.
